Overview
When you check a guest in to Oracle OPERA v5, OPERA requests a pre-authorisation on the guest's card through Juno and the Oracle Payment Interface (OPI). You can take the pre-authorisation with the card present on a payment device or, if a tokenised card is already saved on the reservation, without the card present.

| Product | Juno Hospitality Suite |
| Integration | Oracle OPERA v5 (on-premise) via Oracle Payment Interface (OPI) |
| Version | OPERA v5 |
| Audience | Front office |
What you'll achieve
After completing these steps, the guest is checked in and a pre-authorisation is placed on their card. The amount is set by the authorisation rule selected on the reservation.
Before you start
- To use a payment device, the Chip & Pin Device Available check box must be selected for your workstation in OPERA (Configuration > Setup > Workstations). This applies to card-present check-in.
- For card-not-present check-in, a tokenised card must already be saved on the reservation.
- Check that the correct authorisation rule is selected on the reservation. Rules are set up under Configuration > Set Up > Property Interfaces > Authorization Rules.
- A room must be assigned before the pre-authorisation can be processed.
You can also check guests in from other OPERA screens, such as the Rooms Queue, the OPERA Dashboard and Reservation Search.
Check in with the card present
- From the OPERA menu, select Front Desk > Arrivals.
- Search for and open the reservation.
- Update any reservation details as needed, such as room number or dates of stay.
- Set the payment type to CP (Chip and Pin). Make sure the Card Number and Expiry Date fields are empty and the correct authorisation rule is selected.
- Select Save, then OK to exit.
- Select YES to confirm check-in.
- Assign a room in the pop-up window.
- When the payment type confirmation appears, leave the payment type as CP (Chip and Pin) and select OK. This activates the payment device.
- Ask the guest to insert, swipe or tap their card on the payment device. The authorisation window opens while the request is sent to the payment partner.
Check in with the card not present
- From the OPERA menu, select Front Desk > Arrivals.
- Search for and open the reservation.
- Update any reservation details as needed. Don't change the payment type, card number or expiry date, and make sure the correct authorisation rule is selected.
- Check that the check-in date is today's date and select OK.
- Select YES in the pop-up to confirm check-in.
Expected result
- Card present: once approved, the payment details update in OPERA automatically and the guest is checked in.
- Card not present: the pre-authorisation is processed against the tokenised card on file and the guest is checked in.
You can review authorisations under Options > Credit Cards > Credit Card History.
Troubleshooting
The payment device doesn't activate
Make sure a room is assigned, the payment type is CP (Chip and Pin), and the card fields are empty — the device is only activated when no card details are entered. Then check that Chip & Pin Device Available is selected for your workstation under Configuration > Setup > Workstations.
The transaction is declined
OPERA shows a failed status with a decline response. Declines can be caused by insufficient funds, a card reported lost or stolen, or a lost connection to the bank. Ask the guest for another card.
The pre-authorisation amount is higher or lower than expected
The amount is calculated by the authorisation rule on the reservation. Check which rule is selected before check-in, and ask your OPERA administrator to review the rule set-up if needed.
